Astronomers have been studying the galaxy Messier 83 (M83) using NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory for 14 years. During this extensive observation, they discovered an unexpected population of flickering supernova remnants.
Traditionally, supernova remnants are thought to fade slowly over time. However, the findings from Chandra suggest that these remnants may exhibit more dynamic behavior than previously understood.
This new insight could lead to a reevaluation of existing theories regarding the lifecycle of supernova remnants and their evolution in the cosmos.
